Beginning Apologetics 7: How to Read the Bible by Fr. Frank Chacon and Jim Burnham
Quoting extensively from the Vatican II document Dei Verbum, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that Sacred Scripture is strength for our faith, food for our soul, and a pure and lasting font of spiritual life (CCC 131). It also teaches that Sacred Scripture should be the very soul of sacred theology (CCC, 132). Indeed, because it is the inspired Word of God, the Bible should always have pride of place in our devotional reading and in our study of the faith.
Because of its significance in the life of faith, it is extremely important to read Sacred Scripture well- that is, correctly and fruitfully. We cannot effectively understand the Bible without knowing a little about what it is and how to properly interpret it. A basic knowledge of Catholic teaching on Sacred Scripture is indispensable for getting the most out of reading and studying the Bible. The main purpose of this booklet is to give beginning students of the Bible an overview of the constant teachings of the Catholic Church about Sacred Scripture. The last section of this booklet will help lay Catholics identify and refute the errors that some Catholic biblical scholars are currently promoting.
The booklet is designed to help Catholics appreciate the great treasure they possess in Sacred Scripture. It will also encourage Catholics to immerse themselves in the Bible, and give them the confidence to interpret and defend it effectively.
